FOUR WEEKS. FOUR TRADITIONS. ONE CHRISTMAS JOURNEY.

Christmas looks very different depending on where you spend it.

This December, The Wayfarer's Kitchen is going travelling. We'll begin with the traditions of Poland's Wigilia, head north to Sweden's generous Julbord, cross to Denmark for a wonderfully Danish Christmas — including a rather important hidden almond — before finally coming home to Wales.

Each week brings one carefully curated three-course feast, inspired by the food and traditions that make Christmas special in that country.

A vegetarian journey is available throughout.

FIRST STOP

POLAND

3-6 DECEMBER

Wigilia — Christmas Eve in Poland

In Poland, Christmas begins around the table.

Wigilia, the traditional Christmas Eve feast, is shaped by family, ritual and dishes passed from one generation to the next. Forest mushrooms, cabbage and handmade dumplings are at the heart of the celebration.

For our first Christmas journey, The Wayfarer’s Kitchen brings a little of that tradition to Llanfihangel.

A rich winter soup of forest mushrooms and porcini, finished with cream, herbs and traditional Polish pasta.

THE FEAST

Alternative vegetarian option

SECOND STOP

SWEDEN

10–13 DECEMBER

Julbord — Sweden's Christmas Table

In Sweden, Christmas is a feast of abundance.

The traditional Julbord brings family and friends together around a table filled with contrasting flavours — cured fish, Christmas ham, sausages, creamy potatoes, pickles and lingonberries, with everyone returning to the table for just a little more.

For our second Christmas journey, we're taking the spirit of the Julbord and turning it into one generous Swedish Christmas feast.

THE SWEDISH CHRISTMAS EXPERIENCE

TO BEGIN

Gravlax with Mustard-Dill Sauce
Dill-cured salmon with dark rye, pickled cucumber, lemon and traditional Swedish mustard-dill sauce.

Alternative vegetarian option

Swedish Beetroot, Apple & Dill Salad (V)

THIRD STOP

DENMARK

17–20 DECEMBER

Danish Christmas — Hygge & the Hidden Almond

In Denmark, Christmas is all about hygge — warmth, comfort, family and time together.

The Danish Christmas table is generous without being fussy: crisp roast pork, glossy caramelised potatoes, sweet-sour red cabbage and rich gravy, followed by one of Denmark's best-loved festive traditions — Risalamande, the creamy almond rice pudding served with warm cherry sauce.

And hidden somewhere in the pudding is one whole almond.

Find it, and tradition says you win a little prize.

For our third Christmas journey, The Wayfarer's Kitchen is bringing that cosy Danish Christmas feeling to The Crown — familiar enough to feel comforting, but different enough to feel like you've travelled somewhere new.

THE DANISH CHRISTMAS EXPERIENCE

TO BEGIN

Danish Smoked Salmon & Rye
Smoked salmon with dark rye bread, pickled cucumber, dill and mustard dressing.

Alternative vegetarian option

Mushroom & Dill Tartlet (V)
Warm mushroom, caramelised onion and dill tartlet with a sharp pickled cucumber salad.

THE FEAST

Alternative vegetarian option

Mushroom & Chestnut Wellington (V)
Golden puff pastry filled with mushroom, chestnut, caramelised onion and herbs, served with caramelised potatoes, red cabbage and vegetarian gravy.

SOMETHING SWEET

Risalamande with Warm Cherry Sauce (V)
Vanilla rice pudding folded with whipped cream and almonds, served with warm cherry sauce.

And somewhere in the pudding, one whole almond.

The guest who finds it wins the traditional little prize.

24–27 DECEMBER

We Come Home — A Modern Welsh Christmas

After three weeks travelling, Christmas comes home to Wales.

Rather than falling back on dishes our local guests see all year round, our final feast uses Welsh ingredients and flavours to create something recognisably Christmas — but unmistakably ours.

It's our homecoming: familiar, generous and properly festive.

THE WELSH CHRISTMAS EXPERIENCE

TO BEGIN

Smoked Chicken, Leek & Caerphilly Croquettes
Two small golden croquettes with leek velouté, pickled apple and Welsh mustard.
